Welcome

The staff and pupils of Locharbriggs  Primary School extend a warm welcome to all parents, friends and visitors to our school.

Locharbriggs Primary School and Nursery serves the community of Locharbriggs on the outskirts of Dumfries. The school role is currently  163  including  the nursery. We cater for boys and girls from Nursery – Primary 7.

History

The school was built by the British Aeroplane Company of Western Super Mare, from materials intended to be used to build a new airport at Heathhall.

Extensions were added in 1964 and 1965 to accommodate further rises in population as a private housing scheme was established on the land, ear marked for the airport.

A Nursery Department was introduced in September 1989 to accommodate 60 pre-5s.  In January 1995, this provision was extended to 90 places.

Nursery

We have a nursery class providing up to five sessions per week for children in their pre-school year and five sessions for 3-year-olds in their ante-pre-school year. The nursery is an integral part of the school and provides an excellent learning experience for children.

Facilities

With the recent opening of a new school at Heathhall, we have experienced a drop in role thus reducing our class sizes and creating more learning space. We have recently created a well equipped Music room, a Drama and Movement room, a Learning Loft, a new Learning Support room and Teacher Resource room. In addition our ICT suite creates a stimulating environment for whole class ICT lessons.

There are plans to refurbish the infant toilets and create a Sensory room as well as a Parents Room.We have an extensive grassed playing field at the rear of our school with a small nature garden. Our extensive and attractive grounds promote a healthy lifestyle through playground games during intervals as well as taking PE lessons outdoors when the weather permits. The grounds also provide an excellent learning resource which we regularly tap into.

Travel Directions  to Locharbriggs Primary School

Car –  We have a small car park for staff use only. We would recommend parking at the local community centre across the road and walking over  to ease congestion on Wallamhill Road.

Bicycle - We are lucky enough to have a cycle route running along the back of our school. This route passes through Locharbriggs, Heathhall and then into Dumfries. We have a secure parking area for cyclists to leave their bikes during the school day.

Bus - the school is on a bus route and a frequent bus service connects Locharbriggs to the town centre. Times of the buses can be found at http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=4356&p=0

Transport to and from School

For children living within the designated catchment area of the school, the Authority has a statutory obligation to provide transport where children under the age of 8 could be caused to walk more than two miles to school, or where children over 8 could be caused to walk over three miles to school. Details and times of this transport may be obtained from the Head Teacher or from the Education Offices, 30 Edinburgh Road, Dumfries. Telephone: 01387- 261234
